OpenAI lawyers up for $1T IPO. Nvidia bets $4B that light replaces copper. Apple rents Google's brain.

————————— TRANSMISSION START —————————

Five signals from the machine. OpenAI is lawyering up for a trillion-dollar IPO. Nvidia bet $4 billion that light will replace copper in AI factories. Apple is paying Google a billion a year to make Siri less embarrassing — and it's already behind schedule. xAI built an AI that argues with itself before answering you. And Samsung is about to put Gemini in 800 million devices. The infrastructure layer is hardening. The consumer layer is spreading. The exits are being priced.

OpenAI Hits $25B Annualized Revenue. Hires IPO Lawyers. The Road to $1T Starts Now.

OpenAI crossed $25 billion in annualized revenue in February — up 17% from $21.4B at year-end 2025, and a 233% increase year-over-year. The company has retained Cooley and Wachtell Lipton to begin IPO preparations targeting late 2026 at a valuation north of $1 trillion. Meanwhile, Anthropic has closed the gap to $19 billion in annualized revenue. Two companies. $44 billion combined run-rate. Neither one profitable. OpenAI projects $280 billion in revenue by 2030 and $600 billion in total compute spend. Annual cash burn is projected to hit $57 billion by 2027.

Why it matters: The numbers have entered a domain where normal financial logic stops applying. $25 billion in revenue with no path to profitability until 2030 isn't a business model — it's a bet that AGI infrastructure becomes the most valuable asset class on the planet. The IPO isn't about cashing out. It's about accessing public-market capital to sustain a burn rate that makes the Apollo program look frugal. Anthropic closing the gap at $19B means this isn't a one-horse race. It's two companies spending faster than they can earn, banking on the thesis that the first to general intelligence owns everything that comes after.

Nvidia Drops $4 Billion on Photonics. Light Is the New Copper.

Nvidia announced a $4 billion strategic investment split between Coherent ($2B) and Lumentum ($2B), two optical component manufacturers. The deals include multibillion-dollar purchase commitments and capacity rights for advanced laser and optical networking products. This backs Nvidia's Spectrum-X Photonics platform — co-packaged optics switches delivering 409.6 Tb/s bandwidth, 5x better power efficiency, and 10x higher network resiliency. First hardware ships second half of 2026, integrated into the Rubin GPU platform.

Why it matters: Jensen Huang said the quiet part out loud: "AI factories are a new class of data centers, and networking infrastructure must be reinvented." Translation — GPUs aren't the bottleneck anymore. Data movement is. Electrical signaling between chips is hitting a wall. Photonics — moving data on light instead of electrons — is Nvidia's answer. The $4B dual-vendor investment is classic Huang: lock in supply before competitors realize the game has shifted. If you're still thinking about AI infrastructure as a GPU story, you're already a generation behind. The next constraint is photons.

Apple Pays Google $1B/Year to White-Label Siri's Brain. Already Behind Schedule.

Apple confirmed iOS 26.4 will ship with a fundamentally rebuilt Siri powered by Google's 1.2 trillion parameter Gemini model. Bloomberg reported the deal costs Apple approximately $1 billion per year. The arrangement is white-labeled — no Google branding visible to users. But internal challenges are already pushing features to iOS 26.5 and iOS 27. Apple considered partnerships with OpenAI and Anthropic before choosing Google. The upgraded Siri promises screen-aware context, multi-turn conversations, and cross-app reasoning.

Why it matters: Apple just publicly admitted it cannot build a competitive LLM. The richest company on earth, with $200 billion in cash reserves, decided it was faster to rent Google's brain than build its own. The white-label arrangement is designed to protect the brand — users will think Siri got smarter, not that Google is running the show. But the delays tell the real story. Even with a trillion-parameter model and a billion-dollar check, integrating AI into a privacy-first ecosystem is brutally hard. Apple's moat was always hardware + software integration. Now it's hardware + someone else's software + privacy theater. The cracks are showing before the product even ships.

xAI Ships Grok 4.20: Four AI Agents That Argue Before Answering You.

xAI launched Grok 4.20 on February 17 with a native four-agent architecture. Every complex query runs through four specialized agents in parallel: Grok (coordinator), Harper (research), Benjamin (math/logic), and Lucas — whose sole purpose is to disagree with the other three. The 500B-parameter "small" variant runs on xAI's Colossus cluster. In Alpha Arena's live stock-trading competition, four Grok 4.20 variants took four of the top six spots while OpenAI and Google models finished in the red. Estimated LMArena Elo: 1505-1535. Context window: 2 million tokens.

Why it matters: While every other lab is scaling single models, Musk's team is scaling arguments. The insight — that an AI that debates itself produces better answers than one that doesn't — is not new. But shipping it as a native architecture in production is. Lucas, the designated contrarian, is the real innovation. Every answer gets stress-tested by an agent trained to find the flaw. The stock-trading results aren't a benchmark game — that's real money. The question isn't whether multi-agent works. It's whether the 1.5-2.5x latency penalty matters when accuracy goes up. For high-stakes queries, it doesn't.

Samsung Targets 800 Million Gemini Devices by Year-End. AI Leaves the Premium Tier.

Samsung announced plans to double its Galaxy AI device count from 400 million to 800 million by end of 2026. The key move: extending Gemini-powered AI features to budget A-series phones, not just flagships. Consumer awareness of Galaxy AI branding jumped from 30% to 80% in one year. Samsung is also pushing "Ambient AI" for home appliances — 1 billion AI-powered home devices within three years. Co-CEO TM Roh: "We will apply AI to all products, all functions, and all services."

Why it matters: The real AI distribution war isn't happening in the cloud. It's happening in pockets. Samsung shipping Gemini to 800 million devices gives Google the largest consumer AI distribution channel on earth — no app download required. This is Google's answer to Apple Intelligence: skip the premium tier entirely and flood the mid-range market. The implication for AI startups is brutal. If the baseline phone in someone's pocket already does translation, text generation, and image editing, the bar for consumer AI apps just got insurmountable. Samsung isn't building AI. Samsung is building Google's moat for them. And getting paid to do it.

Tools we're watching. Not sponsors — signal.

Claude Code — Anthropic's terminal-native coding agent. Understands your entire codebase, writes and edits across files, runs tests. If you're still copy-pasting into ChatGPT, you're wasting hours. https://claude.ai

Cursor — AI-native IDE built on VS Code. Tab-complete on steroids with multi-file context. The gap between Cursor users and non-Cursor users is already visible in shipping speed. https://cursor.com

Perplexity Pro — Search that actually answers questions with citations. Replaced Google for research workflows. $20/month for Pro is the best dollar-per-insight ratio in AI right now. https://perplexity.ai

Granola — AI notepad for meetings. Sits on top of your video calls, captures everything, generates structured notes. The meeting you don't document didn't happen. https://granola.ai

Linear — Not an AI tool per se, but the best project management for teams shipping fast. Clean, fast, keyboard-first. If your team is still on Jira, you have a cultural problem. https://linear.app
